Literature Text

When we were young
We gathered pine needles in the backyard
We pretended we were gathering wheat
We had our own little world

When we were young
You'd drink nothing but chocolate milk
Dad would pretend to put hot sauce in it
Because we both loved how cute you were when you yelled

Last week
We found your stash of pills
You were so neat and organized like always
You knew just what to do, to go on your way

Last week
I noticed just in time
You left to heal and the skies opened up
I let the rain do the crying for me

When we first met
You looked perfect and prim and proper
I never knew you'd look back at me
When you did my heart leaped up and sang

When we first met
You kissed me for the first time
I must have closed my eyes a million times
To relive that one moment forever

Last night
You cried and cried and cried
I finally ran out of things to say
I used to be so good at talking people down

Last night
You found a weapon and a threat
I felt like I was dying because you were
I could never truly kill your pain

When we played
We were kings of the world
We ran like wolves and danced
Champions of the night

When we played
You promised me the universe
You became my universal truth
We hung on to the past, they were such good times

That night at practice
You texted me, you live so far away
You said you wanted to end it all
I couldn't even drive to your house

That night at practice
You told me about your hell
The way you could escape
All I could do was speak
.
